Service User at Cygnet Elms Wins Mental Health Award

Flo, a service user at Cygnet Elms in Birmingham, has won an award in the ‘Young Person’ category of the West Midlands Mental Health Star Awards. The ceremony was held virtually on Wednesday 25th May, there were hundreds of nominations overall with 5 shortlisted nominees in the Young Person category.

The Mental Health Star Awards 2022 aim to celebrate the ground breaking work being done across the West Midlands to improve mental health and wellbeing. This year the nominations submitted recognised acts of heroism and innovation that have helped people within communities in the region get through life during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Flo was nominated by Riccardo Brade, Therapy Coordinator at Cygnet Elms, for her work on improving understanding and acceptance of people with autism. He said “It has been a pleasure to support Flo to promote Autism awareness to others. I nominated Flo as she has been a credit to herself and Cygnet Elms. Congratulations Flo, a well-deserved award.”

The team at Cygnet Elms arranged a celebration at the service, with Flo choosing which staff to join her for the occasion. During the ceremony it was highlighted just how much work Flo has done to educate others on the link between autism acceptance and mental health, including writing booklets, raising money for the National Autistic Society and collaborating with staff to deliver training on the subject.

I am very proud to have won the award, thank you to Riccardo for nominating me, I’m glad that I’ve been able to use my experience to help other people.– Flo
