Cygnet Hospital Harrogate opens an all-female acute admissions service

We are pleased to announce that from Monday 6th March 2017 Cygnet Hospital Harrogate’s Sanctuary Ward will change from a mixed to an all-female acute admissions ward.

This decision is in recognition of the increasing numbers of female referrals who, because of the presenting complexities and vulnerabilities, would benefit from an all-female environment. Feedback from bed managers and commissioners is positive and welcoming of this type of environment.

The change to an all-female service coincides with the recent completion of a series of improvement works on the ward. This has seen new anti-ligature windows fitted and the installation of en-suite wetrooms to replace the more traditional bathrooms. All the wet room furniture, including, shower head, basin and toilet are anti-ligature standard. Toilet roll and towel dispensers are recessed removing potential ligature points and the plumbing and electrics can be remotely controlled removing deliberate flooding and self- harm through manipulating power points.

“I am confident that the huge investment in the safety, security and well-being of our staff and patients will promote an environment conducive to the swift recovery of our complex patient group and in particular the more vulnerable female admissions.” Martin Graham, Hospital Manager

Haven Ward, Cygnet Hospital Harrogate’s other acute admissions ward, which will remain a mixed ward, has already had its bathrooms replaced and has also been fitted with the new windows.
