Cygnet’s Expert by Experience Lead features in video for the Equality and Human Rights Commission

Raf Hamaizia, Cygnet Health Care’s Expert by Experience Lead, has recently been at the forefront of a campaign by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) for Mental Health Awareness Week. The campaign, ‘Putting mental health at the top of the agenda’, features a number of video testimonials by experts by experience, including Raf, about their experiences of detention under the Mental Health Act.

In the video Raf speaks powerfully about his experiences of seclusion while he was a service user in an NHS Trust whilst drawing upon the link between human rights and mental health.

Raf states: “The Equality and Human Rights Commission are a very important organisation which champion the basic human rights of us all, including those of us who have experienced mental distress. The videos as part of the ‘Putting mental health at the top of the agenda’ campaign by the EHRC are testimony to the important role human rights play within mental health care. This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and this has been an amazing opportunity to take part in a campaign which will hopefully help raise awareness about these important matters.”
