Promoting Better Health at Cygnet Hospital Maidstone

Martyna Beloviene, dietician at Cygnet Hospital Maidstone, has been encouraging healthy living at the hospital through a ‘Cygnet Health Better Health’ promotion.

Martyna began the promotion in January to encourage everyone to get exercise more, eat nutritious foods and maintain a healthy weight. The promotion is aimed at staff as well as service users with Martyna saying, “I believe that it is very important for us health professionals to be the leading example for our service users to live healthier. We all know that our mental health depends on our physical health.”

Each month Martyna has chosen a different lifestyle aspect to focus on. In January the focus was on planning ahead and eating a healthy breakfast. In February the emphasis was on fluids and encouraging people to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.

In March the focus was on eating more vegetables. One afternoon they held a smoothie making session for service users. They tried different smoothies with different vegetables, everyone loved it and were surprised at the delicious taste of vegetables in a smoothie.

This month the focus is on exercising. Shoe footprints have been added pointing to the stairs to encourage everyone to take the stairs instead of the lift. Later in the month the hospital is also planning to hold their own sports week. Activities for the sports week will include a penalty shootout, a circuit course, basketball and even a space hopper relay!
