Cygnet Health Care a finalist in the 2014 Patient Safety and Care Awards

We are delighted to announce that Cygnet Health Care have been shortlisted as one of the ten finalists in the Mental Health category of the 2014 Patient Safety and Care Awards. The awards, held jointly by the Health Service Journal and the Nursing Times, celebrate excellent, safe and innovative care throughout the health service.

The shortlisting is for the “Collaborative Risk Assessment and Safety Planning” project that has been developed by staff at Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke as part of our corporate plan for Recovery focused service user engagement within the clinical risk process.

Kewstoke’s Clinical Manager Ruth Halsey and Occupational Therapist Steve Miller developed a series of workshops to help service users understand the whole process of risk assessment and management. The workshops explore the area of risk and aim to:

  • Make the risk assessment process transparent
  • Understand the issues associated with risk and safety planning and promote active involvement in the process
  • Identify ways to collaboratively address problem behaviours
  • Identify goals and support required to ensure safety and ensure progress towards community living.

The ward based interactive sessions encourage service users to ask questions and share thoughts about the risk assessment process.

This challenges historic practice and provides a framework for a new and exciting change of culture where the service user is truly empowered and leading their own risk assessment and management with the support of staff.

“We are delighted, at Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke, that we have made the shortlist for the Mental Health Category. We feel that to have been shortlisted alongside a number of NHS Trusts is a real achievement and it gives us the opportunity to share ideas and learn from others at the same time.”Ruth Halsey, Clinical Manager

The winners of all categories will be announced at a ceremony in London on 15 July.
