New specialist residential service for children and young people opening in early 2020

Woodlands, our new specialist residential service for children and young people will be opening in Wigan in early 2020. The service will care for two children or adolescents, aged 7-17 who have complex social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Woodlands will provide long and short-term residential care and aims to be a ‘home from home’: a place where residents can feel safe, secure, and comfortable and cared for.

Woodlands is the first of a number of small residential care homes for children and young people that we have in development in North-West England. These new homes are intended to provide much-needed care for vulnerable children and young people who require the safety and support that is offered within a residential care setting.

These new residential services are the latest offering in our portfolio of services for children and adolescents.

The homes will focus upon establishing a place of safety, building meaningful and lasting relationships and supporting children and young people to access the support they require in order to become the best possible version of themselves.

The homes will provide accommodation for a maximum of three residents, plus staff. Individuals will have their own spacious bedroom, which they will be encouraged to personalise and make their own and this will also provide them with a space to have time alone, whenever they choose to.

Residents will have access to communal areas including a lounge, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and utility room. They will also have access to a garden, where they can relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Each home will have its own car which will be used for trips and activities, to get to school and to meet up with friends and family. The use of public transport will be encouraged wherever possible to promote independence and regular exercise.

Residents will be motivated to take part in a range of activities that benefit their physical and mental health and wellbeing. They will have a choice of activities each week including horse riding, ice skating, trampolining, dance, swimming and music, as well as an opportunity to become a member of a local club such as cadets or guides. They will also be taken on regular outings to local attractions such as museums and the zoo.
