Cygnet Hospital Maidstone hails the success of Music2Empower as a part of mental health treatment

Our latest Music2Empower project has been created by a service user at Cygnet Hospital Maidstone. His music video, inspired by his struggle with mental health and working towards his recovery, features an original rap song ‘All I Need’.

Cygnet Hospital Maidstone helped William take part in the ‘Music 2 Empower’ programme, which was introduced to provide music sessions for service users and give them studio time to record their own music. In his four-minute video, as well as performing, William (25), aka Phenomenal K, describes how music has supported him through his recovery.

“I wrote the lyrics by myself, and I usually get inspiration from what’s happening around me on a daily basis. Making music makes me feel good and fulfilled because I can convey my messages and feelings through the lyrics.”William

William said: “I came up with the name Phenomenal because I thought I was great, and K matches with my last name. Music2Empower also boosted my confidence and self-esteem and I appreciate the whole team who made this project happen for me.”

He added: “I would like the listeners to pay attention to the lyrics and have a good time listening to my music.”

Anthony Dixon, Recovery College Lead at Cygnet Hospital Maidstone said that Music2Empower had also helped improve William’s social relationships and build confidence and self-esteem.

He added: “You wouldn’t think this is a hospital project if you listened to this song on the radio. The music video truly reflected on what William has been feeling and going through.”

“Many other songs that William has created have been absolutely brilliant as well. Following great success with this music video, we are looking to do similar projects with William and other services users in future.”

Charlene Nota, Kingswood Ward Manager, said: “I was very impressed by William’s work, and he has done such an amazing job.

Charlene explained how music helped William’s recovery. “I know there are times where his mental health can really make him feel quite low. But when he’s excited about something, it’s really nice to see that he can bring the skills together and motivate himself to create his own music.”

The ‘Music 2 Empower’ initiative launched on World Mental Health Day 2019 to support music therapy-related projects throughout the organisation and to allow talented service users to showcase their abilities, give hope, inspire others and benefit from this well-established psychological approach.

Raf Hamaizia, Expert by Experience Lead at Cygnet Health Care said: “Phenomenal K’s rap is so inspirational. The way he is able to tell stories through his music and articulate his journey, emotions and challenges brings a whole new dynamic to understanding and working towards both mental health awareness and recovery. Music 2 Empower is not only about empowering the artists themselves, but the artists ability to also empower others.”
