Lego-based therapy supporting residents in the North-East

Occupational Therapist and Sensory Integration Practitioner, Tania Amos, has been developing a Lego-building activity to be used therapeutically to support residents and their individuals’ goals.

Tania, who is based at Oaklands in Hexham and also works at Hollyhurst in Darlington and Thornfield Grange in Bishop Auckland, said, “Lego is an activity for all ages, abilities, genders and it is so much fun, as well have having so many therapeutic qualities.

“One resident, who rarely sits down was able to engage in self-expression through Lego for 15 mins and has asked to do it again. Having seen the resident’s work, three staff members made a Lego model as well. This in itself increases the likelihood of getting staff to use it with residents out with these therapy sessions.

“This verified to me, the potential Lego has as a fun way to achieve an outcome, distract yourself from negative thoughts, work on praxis skills, fine finger, gross motor, hand eye coordination and bilateral integration and sequencing following a pattern step by step to create.

“The Lego based therapy is still in its early stages but I will review after six weeks. I will use a baseline tool to measure engagement and times. I will also risk assess and write up guidelines with aims and benefits of this intervention.”
