Local artist creates ‘Words of Wisdom’ mural for Cygnet Lodge Kenton

Service users at Cygnet Lodge Kenton have lent a helping hand to a visiting artist to create a beautiful new mural at the Lodge. Professional artist Mandy Marks Wheatley has painted two new murals along the walls of the Lodge’s reception area.

Wheatley began the project by visiting Cygnet Lodge Kenton and talking to both service users and staff about the images, themes and words that would give them inspiration. Using these ideas, Wheatley then designed two murals for the reception area which utilised the suggestions made by service users and staff. They were delighted to see their suggestions used in the final mural, which includes words such as “hope”, “trust”, “friendship” and “recovery”.

The mural has been a big hit with the Lodge’s service users, one of whom said, “I love the new mural, it brightens up my day.” Service users are now keen for Mandy to paint a larger and more detailed mural in the Cabin, which is used for therapy groups, community meetings and ward rounds.

“It is important to have positive surroundings for our service users to have the best possible experience on their journey to recovery. That is why we are so pleased with Mandy’s wonderful mural. It really is an inspiration piece.”Farayi Nyakubaya, Ward Manager

The mural is part of Cygnet Lodge Kenton’ art therapy programme. Art therapy uses the creative process of making art to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of service users. This form of therapy uses a wide variety of art materials, including paints, clay and batik, to create visual representations of thought and feelings.
