Service users on Cygnet Hospital Ealing’s New Dawn ward have begun a new gardening project. The idea for the ‘Healing Garden’ originated from a Healthy Living Skills group and, with the support of the Occupational Therapy team, service users have been planting flowers as well as herbs that they aim to use in future cooking sessions.

The aim of the project is to motivate service users to continue looking after their environment and be responsible for their plants. As part of the project service users have also researched which fruit and vegetables are in season and the benefits of eating seasonal food.

Gardening gives the opportunity for physical exercise, spending time in the fresh air, building peer support network, practising mindfulness, strengthening connection with nature, improving self-esteem, promoting sense of responsibility and building daily routine.

“It was enjoyable to be outside and exciting to be planting something that we could nurture and hopefully enjoy.”Service user
