Cygnet Hospital Taunton provides specialist inpatient services for older adults experiencing acute or enduring mental health illness. The extra beds will allow the hospital to meet current service demands.
A total of 13 additional en-suite bedrooms will be provided over the two main floors. The first seven bedrooms are expected to be completed in 40 weeks’ time.
These seven ground floor bedrooms are being designed to accommodate a patient group with a higher level of dependence and will include hoist tracking. There will also be access to a new patio and planted area.
The final six bedrooms will be completed by November 2018 at the end of the project.
Improvements will be made to the communal lounge on the current ground floor together with extended activity / therapy space.
The construction contract has been placed with Melhuish & Saunders after an open competitive tender process which saw the Glastonbury based-firm selected on the basis of the quality of their previous work.
To help minimise any potential impact the building work might have, a number of measures have been put in place to ensure people are comfortable and not impacted negatively. A new lounge and quiet room have been created where people can relax and enjoy peace and quiet. The peaceful outdoor space offered by the hospital courtyard will remain fully accessible.
