Excel and Exceed Centre achieves Direct Claim Status from NCFE

Well done to the education team at Cygnet Hospital Bury’s Excel and Exceed Centre who have achieved Direct Claim Status (DCS) from the Northern Council for Further Education (NCFE).

The Excel and Exceed Centre is the specialist provider of education for all young people admitted to the CAMHS services at Cygnet Hospital Bury. NCFE is a registered educational charity and a national Awarding Organisation.

Direct Claim Status is a scheme that enables education providers to claim learner certificates without needing authorisation from an External Quality Assurer (EQA).

An External Quality Assurer (EQA) from NCFE visited the Excel and Exceed Centre on 17th July 2019 to assess and rate the following two courses provided by school:

  • NCFE CACHE Level 1 Award in Mental Health Awareness
  • NCFE CACHE Level 1 Award in Stress Awareness

For Direct Claim Status to be achieved after one visit a centre must achieve an EQA visit report that shows:

  • Grade 1s exclusively
  • No outstanding actions from your previous EQA visit report
  • A minimum of 3 learner portfolios sampled on the visit, with at least 2 completed portfolios sampled and marked as ‘final’; other learners sampled can have ‘new’ or ‘mid’ status
  • Reliability of assessment graded as A.

The assessor found that Excel and Exceed Centre met all of the above criteria. The report concluded that, “The teaching, assessment and moderation practice at the school is carried out with professional care and diligence and there were no issues arising from the visit in relation to quality. For this reason DCS will be awarded at the first visit, a relatively unusual occurrence, but one that will benefit the particular circumstances at the school and is also deserved.”

“Achieving Direct Claim Status after a first visit is a fantastic achievement. Well done to Tayyaba Ahmed who has been the key member of staff who has launched, taught and assessed these qualifications in the school.”Jennifer Almond, Headteacher
