He joins Cygnet Hospital Stevenage from Alpha Hospitals, an independent provider of medium/low secure and mental health rehabilitation services. He worked there for over seven years as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director, and helped develop their medium secure mental illness and low secure PD services from scratch. Previously he has played a pivotal role in establishing a brand new psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Goodmayes Hospital, North East London NHS Foundation Trust.

He has a special interest in the treatment of service users suffering from complex mental health problems, including those with substance misuse and personality disorders, for which he tends to use an eclectic approach.

Dr Ahmad completed his higher psychiatric training in London, and was appointed as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Charing Cross Hospital, London; one of the major teaching hospitals in the country. During his time in this post, he was given association with the Imperial College as an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in recognition of his valuable contribution to both research and teaching. Professor Steven Hirsh, Professor of Mental Health and Director of Teaching Governance, described Dr Ahmad as a first-rate educational supervisor, not least because of his clinical and academic knowledge, but also for his skill in helping trainees develop their full potential.

He believes that working with service users and carers using the shared care model and recovery approach is the best way forward in the current economic climate, which not only meets the requirements of the service commissioners and regulators, but also enhances the service user experience, thus promoting the healthcare business in a competitive market.
