Dr Hina Tahseen

Congratulations to Dr Hina Tahseen, a consultant psychiatrist at Cygnet Delfryn House in Mold, who has been shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Specialty Doctor / Associate Specialist of the Year’ category in the Royal College of Psychiatrists annual RCPsych Awards.

The RCPsych Awards mark the highest levels of achievement in psychiatry and to make the shortlist of finalists is a huge accomplishment. The awards consider excellence in a number of areas including clinical work, medical education, leadership and management, research, innovation, and parity of esteem.

Dr Tahseen has been recognised for a number of initiatives in particular her dedication to improving physical health care in mental health settings. This includes starting monthly physical health clinics for all service users at Cygnet Delfryn House, starting two Quality Improvement programmes based on physical health, and establishing reminder programmes to review lithium monitoring and high-dose antipsychotic monitoring.

“I am so humbled and excited to have been shortlisted for the awards. As an international medical graduate, I could never have imagined coming this far.”Dr Hina Tahseen

In the last year Dr Tahseen has also submitted extracts for the RCPsych college conference, including having one selected as a top poster for oral presentation. She is an active part of the Association of University of Teachers of Psychiatry Charity (AUTP) and is involved in several projects such as promoting international medical graduates and writing an OSCE guide for medical students. She is currently rolling out the MRCPsych teaching programme at Cygnet Health Care with her medical director, for specialty doctors and prospective doctors who would like to join Cygnet in future.

At Cygnet Health Care’s recent Annual Psychiatrists Awards, Dr Tahseen was named Innovator of the Year for 2021. She was singled out for her dedication to quality improvement and innovation at the rehabilitation service over the past year, including to reduce stigma around mental illness.

On receiving the Innovator of the Year award Dr Tahseen said, “Cygnet fosters a culture of creativity and I always felt encouraged and valued whenever I went to my team or senior management with an idea. I couldn’t have achieved this award had Cygnet and the Delfryn team not supported me throughout…from my budding ideas to implementation.”

In what has been an incredible month of recognition Dr Tahseen was also recently named as having achieved the highest grade on the taught stage of the programme (full-time route) on the MSc Psychiatry at Cardiff University.

Everyone at Cygnet is very proud of Hina’s achievements and wish her all the best at the final of the RCPsych awards which is being held virtually on Thursday 11 November.
