Diversity and Inclusion day at Cygnet Hospital Harrow

Cygnet Hospital Harrow celebrated Diversity and inclusion Day on Wednesday 27th October. Over the course of the week they sampled food from different countries, with the main event on Wednesday giving the multicultural staff team and service users the opportunity to share their stories and learn from each other.

Entertainment was provided by staff and services users. Staff spoke about the country that they came from, its culture, language, customs and folk tales.

The Hospital Manager Alexander Lawrence introduced the programme, he informed participants that the event was organised to celebrate diversity and recognise the contribution of staff from different countries. The events were also aiming to share the importance of promoting equality.

This was followed by Psychologist Edgar Casimiro and Linda Pinto from housekeeping speaking about traditional Portuguese Folk Tale the “Barcelos” including a short film about Portugal.

Nigerian Dr Ayomide Ajayi told a Nigerian story and song to the audience, and Funke Nanna spoke about the different tribal groups in Nigeria, their culture, language and religion.

Rick Murtagh spoke about his dual heritage of being Irish and Jewish and his experience in growing up with dual heritage. Violet, the administrator for Byron Ward, demonstrated her cooking skills and provided a selection of samosas and gave a history about the inhabitants and settlers of Portuguese ancestry and the migration history.

Musical entertainment was facilitated by Dhimitri, occupational therapist, and the Harrow Hospital Music Group performed the amazing music.

There were displays of crafts, Steve Benson–Cole provided the Didgeridoo for exhibition whilst Valma spoke about the instrument.

Services users really enjoyed all of the activities and talks stating “it was a good to find out about other peoples cultures”.
