Cygnet launches new Nursing Strategy

On 22nd February 2019, Cygnet held an event to launch the new Nursing Strategy for the organisation. The event was held at the Royal College of Nursing in London, and was well attended.

The day began with a talk from John Orchard, Chief Executive of the Cavell Nurses’ Trust who spoke about the great work that Cavell do to support Nurses, and the exciting ways that Cygnet can be involved in this great work. John was followed by Nicky Brownjohn, Head of Quality and Safeguarding for NHS England who provided an update on the national safeguarding priorities, and how important it is that Cygnet help drive this forward.

Kate Sanders, Practice Development Facilitator from the Foundation of Nursing Studies then gave a talk about developing organisational culture, and how to develop nursing practice across the organisation. David Wilmott, Director of Nursing then took to the stage to formally launch the Nursing Strategy, and talked through each objective and the plans to deliver them.

The afternoon opened with 3 workshops, each focused on a separate area practice:

Group 1: Protecting Vulnerable Adults – Led by James Holloway, Group 2: Coproduction and recovery – Led by Sibo Attley and Jamie-Leigh Dakin, and Group 3: Theraputic Care – Led by Caroline Harris-Birtles.

Following the workshops, a group discussion was held about the future of learning disability nursing and possible ways that Cygnet can continue to support this crucial area of nursing. The day was brought to a close by a powerful talk on Trauma Informed Care from Iris Benson, an Expert By Experience who reminded attendees of the importance of choosing their words carefully as words ‘can hurt or heal’.

The Nursing Team would like to thank all who attended the event and helped to make it such a great day, along with a special thanks to all the presenters for their excellent contributions.

The team would also like to say a personal thank you to Iris Benson for sharing her story with us, your inspiring words captivated the audience and gave them real ways to help improve care in their clinical areas.
