Cygnet hosts ‘Quality in CAMHS Services’ Webinar

On Wednesday 23rd September we successfully held our first CPD-accredited webinar – ‘Quality in CAMHS Services’. The webinar featured presentations by CAMHS professionals from Cygnet services as well as colleagues from the NHS.

The webinar was chaired by Dr Naresh Rasquinha, Cygnet’s Regional Director for the Midlands region. Following a welcome address and overview of Cygnet’s CAMHS services by Group Clinical Director Dr Jon Van Niekerk the first presentation of the day was from Dr Richard Church, Medical Director at Cygnet Hospital Woking. Richard’s presentation was on ‘Pathways of Care’ with a particular focus on the Youth Justice system.

The following presentation, by Tim McDougall, Associate Director of Nursing / Director of Infection Prevention and Control, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, looked at ‘Maintaining Quality and Safety in Inpatient CAMHS Services’. In a wide ranging talk Tim provided a review of CQC inspections of CAMHS services, looked at the challenges faced by inpatient CAMHS services and provided a ‘best case formulation’ on providing a quality CAMHS service.

Dr Laurie Van Niekerk, Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist at Cygnet Hospital Bury, then gave an overview of the hospital’s journey to achieve QNIC accreditation for all four of its inpatient CAMHS services. Laurie finished his presentation with a list of top ten tips for staff working in CAMHS services that had been put together by the young people supported at Cygnet Hospital Bury.

In the afternoon session Dr Ananta Dave of Lincolnshire Partnership Trust looked at ‘Respecting, Valuing and Looking after our Staff’. This was followed by a presentation by Fiona Massie, Mental Health Case Manager for NHS England and NHS Improvement on ‘Partnership Working’. Fiona highlighted the importance of joint working between different services with support from the CQC and NHS England. She also looked at examples of how joint working can help services create outside the box solutions to create care pathways for young people who don’t ‘fit’ in services.

The final presentation on the day was by Dr Triveni Joshi and members of the multi-disciplinary team at Cygnet Hospital Godden Green. They focused on ‘Contagion’ and how negative influences can impact the environment of a CAMHS service. The team also discussed remedies to avoid this happening by providing structures, routines and what they described as ‘layers of good experience’.

The webinar was a great success and we’d like to thank all the presenters as well as everyone who worked behind the scenes to make it possible. We will be announcing more webinars in the near future so please keep an eye on our Events page for updates.
