Cygnet Hospital Beckton’s Fun Fortnight

Cygnet Hospital Beckton recently ran their latest Fun Fortnight. The Fun Fortnights are held twice a year at the hospital, one in the summer and one at Christmas. It is a time for service users and staff to take a break from the scheduled timetable and have a chance to try something new and fun.

The fortnight was organised and run by the hospital’s Occupational Therapy department. Highlights of the recent fortnight included a visit from the rabbits and guinea pigs of Spitalfields City Farm, a cinema trip and the return of The Great Beckton Bake Off.

The fortnight kicked off with a food art group and complementary therapies, followed by bingo and a sports day where the wards went head to head for a trophy. The highlight of week one had to be a visit from a professional singer who helped the service users record their own CD. Service users got involved in the technical area of recording, singing the chosen song and then designing the CD cover.

“It was the best thing I’ve ever done. I was smiling all day.”Service user, Cygnet Hospital Beckton

The second week included the animals coming to visit, a community trip to the National Gallery and The Great Beckton Bake Off. The judges had the tough task of sampling EVERY cake before they could finally choose the winners.

Another competition was Beckton’s Got Talent with guest judge Raf Hamiazia, Cygnet’s Expert by Experience Lead. Acts ranged from singing, to comedy to magic tricks to a packed audience before the winners were finally announced under a shower of confetti. Fun Fortnight ended with an End of Summer party, full of fruit palm trees and exotic fruits, an Hawaiian photo booth and a game of limbo.

Thank you to everyone who took part and particularly the team in the Occupational Therapy department for organising and running such a fantastic fortnight.
