Cygnet Hospital Beckton upgraded to ‘Good’ in latest CQC report

Well done to the team at Cygnet Hospital Beckton who have seen the hospital’s rating upgraded to ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Cygnet Hospital Beckton is situated in the East End of London and has four different specialist wards including personality disorder and mental health with learning disabilities.

The latest CQC report follows an unannounced inspection between 18th and 19th January 2022. It was a focused inspection looking at the domains of safe and responsive on wards for people with learning disabilities and the domain of safe within services for people with personality disorders. As a result of improvements made to the mental health with learning disabilities service the hospital is now rated ‘Good’ in all five key lines of enquiry.

The full report, published on the CQC website, highlights many areas of positive practice, including:

  • Staff assessed and managed risks to service users and themselves well. They achieved the right balance between maintaining safety and providing the least restrictive environment possible to support service users’ recovery.
  • Staff had the skills to develop and implement good positive behaviour support plans and followed best practice in anticipating, de-escalating and managing challenging behaviour.
  • Staff understood how to protect service users from abuse and the service worked well with other agencies to do so.
  • Staff planned and managed discharge well. They liaised well with services that would provide aftercare and were assertive in managing the discharge care pathway.
  • The design, layout, and furnishings of the ward supported service users’ treatment, privacy and dignity.
  • The service met the needs of all service users – including those with a protected characteristic. Staff helped service users with communication, advocacy and cultural and spiritual support.

Judith Etheridge, Hospital Manager, said “I’m very proud of what we have achieved here as a team. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the team for their dedication, commitment and for their hard work and the support they have given to each other during the last year.”
