Cygnet Hospital Beckton presents Reflective Mapping at the Division of Forensic Psychology

The Beckton team and their presentation on Reflective Mapping

This month staff from Cygnet Hospital Beckton presented Reflective Mapping at The Division of Forensic Psychology Conference.

The Reflective Mapping model uses ideas and principles from the Cognitive Analytic Therapy to help teams develop reflective skills. Reflective Mapping also aims to contribute to relational security and staff wellbeing, and has been successfully used in Cygnet Hospital Beckton since June 2016.

Feedback from staff has been positive; almost 90% of the attendees found the session helpful and engaging, with comments such as ‘I found it very interesting’ being fed back to facilitators. Staff attendance at reflective practice sessions has increased considerably since Map and Talk began and we are continuing to improve and develop the process.

The workshop was delivered by Dr. Kanny Olojugba (Consultant Clinical Psychologist), Atena Papatraian (Forensic Psychologist) and Georgina Cox (Assistant Psychologist). The workshop aimed to outline the psychodynamic and socio-political factors that impact on the experience of frontline staff which often results in burnout.

It also aimed to provide an understanding of the Cognitive Analytic Model of Reflective Practice (Reflective Mapping) used at Cygnet Hospital Beckton, both through presenting the theory behind the model and engaging workshop attendees to take part in a ‘live’ Map and Talk session. Finally, an evaluation of the process and its reception at Beckton was presented, along with reflections on areas for improvement identified so far.

The workshop was received very well and those who attended seemed interested and inspired by how Reflective Mapping differs from the traditional models used in Reflective Practice.
