Cygnet Appletree

We are pleased to announce that, following an inspection on 7-8th August 2019, Cygnet Appletree has been rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Cygnet Appletree is situated in Meadowfield, near Durham and provides a high dependency inpatient rehabilitation service for women who have severe and enduring mental illness. In addition, on Thursday 14th November, the hospital will be opening a new acute service, Pippin Ward, for women who may require an emergency admission or who are in crisis.

The full report (published on the CQC website) highlights many areas of positive practice, including:

  • Staff assessed and managed risks to patients and themselves well. They achieved the right balance between maintaining safety and providing the least restrictive environment possible in order to facilitate patients’ recovery.
  • The hospital had a good track record on safety.
  • Staff treated patients with compassion and kindness. They respected patients’ privacy and dignity. They understood the individual needs of patients and supported patients to understand and manage their care, treatment or condition.
  • Staff involved patients in care planning and risk assessment and actively sought their feedback on the quality of care provided.
  • The design, layout, and furnishings of the hospital supported patients’ treatment, privacy and dignity.
  • Staff felt respected, supported and valued. They reported that the provider promoted equality and diversity in its day-to-day work and in providing opportunities for career progression.
  • Staff engaged actively in local and national quality improvement activities.

“After reading such a positive CQC report I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication displayed by the whole team at Cygnet Appletree. We would not be where we are today without such staff and I would like to use this opportunity to thank each and every staff member for their continued efforts, determination and passion.”Claire Nicholson, Hospital Manager
