From 16th-22nd May it was Mental Health Awareness Week and, based on this year’s theme of ‘Relationships’, service users and staff on Cygnet Hospital Ealing’s New Dawn Ward organised a ‘Building Bridges’ event. The aim of the event was to promote a healthy community by creating and strengthening bonds on the ward.

As part of the event the hospital’s dramatherapist, Nicky Morris, facilitated an interactive session for staff and service users. Through playful activities they shared emotions, engaged in trust building exercises, worked as a team and explored the concept that our differences are less than our similarities.

“It was great to see staff enjoying themselves with us in the Dramatherapy session and it helped them to see how helpful it can be.”Service user, New Dawn ward

A fundraising event was also organised with the help of the Occupational Therapy team. Staff and service users made great efforts to bake delicious desserts and decorate the room. Everyone then took the time to enjoy a shared afternoon tea together. The money raised from the event was donated to the Mental Health Foundation.

“At the end of the day we are all humans, sharing same dreams, like travelling abroad, sharing same feelings, like missing our children. It brought us closer with colleagues and our patients.”Staff member, New Dawn ward
