Cygnet Lodge Brighouse to become an all-male service

We are pleased to announce that from the end of this year Cygnet Lodge Brighouse will become an all-male service. This move is in response to a clear need for male mental health rehabilitation beds, as seen by the number of referrals to the service over the past twelve months. A notable trend at the point of referral has been that commissioners have asked for a single sex environment.

As a result of this move we will be stopping all new female admissions to Cygnet Lodge Brighouse with immediate effect. We will also be working closely with the small number of women who are existing service users, together with their care co-ordinators, to deliver effective and appropriate discharge plans.

“This is a truly positive change and will complement the exisitng male care pathway of Cygnet services in West Yorkshire. It will also ensure we are able to provide beds for male service users who require a single sex environment to receive appropriate care and treatment. We envisage the Lodge will become all male by the end of December 2015.”Richard Williams, Hospital Manager

Cygnet Lodge Brighouse originally opened in February 2006 as a mixed gender rehabilitation service for detained and informal service users. The service has 24 beds in total, three of which are in a specially designed flatlet that allows service users to gain more independence prior to moving on to their own supported flat within the community. In addition to a full suite of therapies, the Lodge also provides a specialist substance misuse programme to cater for service users with a dual diagnosis.

The service is part of a pathway of men’s inpatient mental health services that Cygnet provides in West Yorkshire, including emergency admissions services at Cygnet Hospital Wyke and a low secure service on Cygnet Hospital Bierley’s Shelley Ward. Following the recent acquisition of Alpha Hospitals, Cygnet Lodge Brighouse can also now provide a natural extension to the existing secure male care pathway at Alpha Hospital Bury.
