Cygnet Hospital Beckton scores 95% in Quality Network Review

Cygnet Hospital Beckton’s Bewick Ward has scored 95% in a review by the Quality Network for Forensic Mental Health Services. This is a national benchmarking process and is indicative of the improvement by Bewick from 86% last year to 95% this cycle.

Bewick Ward achieved 100% ratings in seven of the 11 areas assessed, these were, ‘Admission’, ‘Physical Health Care’, ‘Discharge’, ‘Service Environment’, ‘Workforce’, ‘Governance’ and ‘Equalities’.

The 95% score is the outcome of a peer review visit to the hospital on 17th May 2016. The Quality Network review team identified the following areas as the key strengths and achievements of Bewick Ward:

  • The ward is light and bright and attention has been paid to including patient artwork throughout, creating a very homely and welcoming feel
  • The well-established, excellent links formed with community organisations such as Beckton Globe and the local leisure centre
  • The ward has developed a real opportunities to work programme and encourages patients to access work placements in the community
  • The service had given excellent consideration to managing patients’ needs for de-escalation and how to treat patients in a dignified and safe manner
  • There is a buddy system in place for all new staff starters to help guide them through the induction process
  • Bewick Ward offers a robust and varied training programme for its staff
  • Staff were commended by the peer-review team for their level of attention to carer’s input within the service
