Cygnet Hospital Beckton’s Fun Week

To mark the transition to a new therapy timetable, and to give service users a break from their usual weekly therapy routine, the Occupational Therapy department at Cygnet Hospital Beckton recently held a Fun Week. A host of exciting and interesting events and activities were organised and even though the weather tried its best to intervene nothing could spoil the good time had by all.

One of the highlights of the week was a visit from some of the animals from Spitalfields City Farm. In particular Marmite the ferret and the rabbits, Snowy, Thumper, Shirley and Roy, were a great hit with both service users and staff.

On Wednesday the Music Workshop Company visited to provide a percussion workshop. The workshop explored African and Samba drumming styles and gave service users the chance to find their rhythm. Again it was very popular with one service user commenting that “the session was brilliant, that sounds are still playing in my head“. Another service user said, “I really enjoyed it, when are they coming back?”

The grand finale to the week was ‘Beckton’s Got Talent’ with service users performing on the keyboard, singing and reciting poems. Each entry got £5 gift voucher and the winner received £10. Everyone was then treated to a special performance by two Activities Co-Ordinators, Jackie Petersen (Hansa Ward) and Chris Meek (New Dawn Ward) to PJ and Duncan’s ‘Lets Get Ready to Rumble’ which featured the pair rapping and breakdancing.

One service user summed the week up by saying “Everything was great, it was a great week“. Emily Kobelis, Beckton’s Deputy Head of Occupational Therapy, said, “With a new therapy timetable due to start at the beginning of September it was the perfect time to give everyone a break and have some fun! At the same time the variety of events allowed service users to develop new interests and explore new activities. It was a great success.”
