Adrian celebrates 50 years in Nursing

Cygnet’s Specialist Trainer and Learning and Development Project Manager, Adrian Ashurst, reaches a personal milestone this week, as it was 50 years ago, on January 4th 1971, when he commenced his registered nurse training at Salford Royal Hospital.

In his 50 years, Adrian has worked in the NHS and for a number of the country’s leading independent care providers, holding a variety of senior management posts, and is also currently the Consultant Editor of Nursing & Residential Care, a monthly journal available on-line. In the 50 years since starting his training he has seen many changes in nursing, but one thing that remains consistent is the passion he has and see’s in his colleagues to support people. He has never looked back and remains proud to be a nurse.

Adrian has worked at Cygnet Health Care, since 2006 and is responsible for the delivery of specialist training courses, and managing Learning and Development projects throughout Cygnet.

He has recently started to write his fifth book, whose working title is ‘How to survive in Nursing – a practical guide to issues seldom covered in University lectures.’

Adrian said, “This book will give me the opportunity to reflect on my nursing and management career to date and pass on some tips to those people just entering the nursing profession.”

As part of the research and development for the new book, Adrian would be keen to hear from any colleagues with interesting stories which would help to illustrate how much nursing and health care has changed over the last 50 years.

“I’ve worked with Adrian since he joined the company. He never fails to raise spirits and enthuse people with his energy and anecdotes. I know there are plenty of people within the company who will have had the experience of attending one of Adrian’s training courses or inductions and will agree that he always manages to make everyone feel included, keep the room motivated and is able to draw on his vast experience to bring scenarios to life. I’m also sure there are many people around the company who raise a smile at his pronunciation of the word “Care”! 50 years in nursing, what a great asset Adrian is to the profession and Cygnet Health Care. Congratulations!”Jenny Gibson, HR Director

In his spare time Adrian is passionate about his photography, writing and spending time with his two grown up children Brittany and Reece.
