Mermaid Ward is a 10 bed CAMHS PICU service with a 2 bed emergency place of safety suite for young people with severe mental illness. This new service is due to open in October 2020. The focus on Mermaid Ward is on stabilisation with a view on enabling transition to a general acute ward or back into the care of community services. The service is able to provide robust care and support for young people displaying significant levels of challenging behaviour. The ward is located on the ground floor and has a separate entrance to the outside of the building. This allows the service the ability to have a short stay emergency place of safety suite for young people who are in crisis and are in need of an emergency admission. These individuals who are in crisis may not be subject to the Mental Health Act and may require an assessment. The average length of stay in our PICU service is eight to twelve weeks. Referrals will be accepted from all over the UK. We offer a rapid response system and aim to respond to referral requests within an hour of receiving adequate clinical information.
