Redwood Ward – High Dependency Complex Care Service for men with Learning Disabilities

Redwood Ward at Cygnet Hospital Taunton provides a 7 bed high dependency complex care service for men with learning disabilities and complex mental health needs.

The ethos of the service is to work with the individual to enable them to transition out of a hospital environment in a safe and effective way, enabling them to live as independent a life as possible. Building on the expertise of the other learning disability services within the Cygnet Health Care portfolio, the service is supported by our MyPath learning disability care model, offering a multi-disciplinary led approach.

Our comprehensive multi-disciplinary team includes a mix of RNLDs and RGNs as well as Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Psychology, meaning we are able to accommodate service users who may have complex physical health needs and associated diagnoses. In addition, we are also able to work with service users who may present with specific high risks through the use of evidence based risk assessments.

In line with Transforming Care, Redwood Ward supports the provision of care closer to home for men with a learning disability, and further strengthens our national network of specialist pathways.

Our approach:

Redwood Ward provides a high level of therapeutic care and support, underpinned by a Positive Behaviour Support approach. Each service user has a personalised, co-produced Positive Behavioural Support plan to inform their care and treatment pathway.

Our experienced multi-disciplinary team supports our service users in behaviour management, emotional regulation and offence-related work. We will support individuals in developing community links, to actively participate in activities on and off-site and to fully engage in their treatment.

With a focus on discharge planning from the outset, the team on Redwood Ward place the individual at the heart of their own care, developing collaborative plans detailing achievements and progress towards transition to the next step on their recovery journey. Building on the expertise of the other learning disability services within the Cygnet Health Care portfolio, the service is supported by our myPath learning disability care model.
