Bearsted Ward – Specialist PICU Service for Men

Gender: Male

Age: 18+

Beds: 15

Bearsted Ward is our 15 bed male PICU service at Cygnet Hospital Maidstone and accepts emergency and crisis admissions. Referrals are accepted from all areas, including acute and prison services

Our aim is a short, rapid intervention to help service users regain a sense of control and order in their lives, so they can move to a less restrictive care setting and ultimately return home.

“Cygnet Hospital Maidstone has been the best facility my brother has ever been in, and we have all said it in the family. Hands down it has been the best and he has been in many. Cygnet have been outstanding throughout so thank you so much for all you have done for him”Family member of service user

“My son spent almost 3 months on the PICU ward and the support he received was amazing. The communication between myself and the hospital was fantastic on what was an extremely difficult time. We cannot thank the staff enough for the care my son received and we are so grateful for the understanding and support that was given to himself and his family.”Parent of service user

The service provides expert, intensive, short-term, individualised care for service users detained under the Mental Health Act. Service users may present with increased risks that require them to be assessed and treated in a PICU environment.

“Bearsted Ward has great staff and there are more activities to do here compared to other hospitals I’ve been to. They have nice astro turf, a basket ball hoop and a variety of footballs to help pass the time. Also the food is pretty good here. They also have a nice multi-gym which we can use everyday for 30 minutes with staff supervision. This is the nicest hospital I’ve been too so far.”Service user
