The Kewstoke Community Farm Project was formed in June 2012 as a joint venture scheme between Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke and Active Arts, a local charity, and has seen the creation of Kewstoke Community Farm on the hospital grounds. The farm was officially opened in April 2013, an event that was covered in the monthly magazine Growing Places. The project invites volunteers from within the local Weston-super-Mare and Kewstoke communities to get involved with horticultural activities, it also engages with local community organisations who wish to provide volunteers or become involved in the project, such as learning about animal care and growing produce. The project also provides volunteer opportunities for resident service users at the hospital who are then able to make vital links with community providers involved in the scheme, in the hope of leading to vocational opportunities. The farm has two greenhouses that grow an assortment of crops (such as 24 different chili varieties) as well as resident pygmy goats, hens, rooster and the Kunekune pig, ‘Mrs Wobbles’.
