Martin Graham is the Hospital Manager for Cygnet Hospital Bieley, he joined Cygnet in September 2010. Martin has worked in both the NHS and Independent Sector for 30 years and has extensive management experience within medium secure, low secure and Acute Psychiatry. Martin is keen to promote partnership working and will be strengthening relationships between the NHS and Independent Sector in the future.
Hannah studied in Leeds and qualified as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in 2011 before joining Cygnet Hospital Bierley in the November as a preceptor nurse. Hannah started her time in Low Secure Female PD services before being exposed to other wards in the hospital for professional development such as Denholme, Shelley and Bowling.
Hannah became a CTL on Bowling Ward in 2014 working across both Shelley and Bowling before progressing to Ward Manager on Shelley Ward in 2016, soon after transferring across to Bowling Ward in early 2017. Hannah is now the Clinical Manager for the hospital.
Hannah is very psychologically minded and has a keen interest in psychological based therapies to help our service users to achieve their optimum level of recovery. Hannah is highly motivated to work as part of a team to deliver a high standard of patient focused care. Hannah has also completed an Advanced Diploma in Health and Social Care Leadership and Management.
Liam graduated in 2012 with a degree in Law (LLB Hons) from Leeds Beckett University. Prior to Joining Cygnet Health Care in 2015 he worked in financial services before spending some time with the RNLI and then in the leisure industry, working in France.
Liam joined Cygnet through the Management Trainee program. During his first year he spent time working with each of the head office functions, gaining valuable experience within the finance, governance, commercial/sales and operational teams, building links with staff across the company. He went on to develop his operational experience at Cygnet Hospital Beckton and then as the Assistant General Manager at Cygnet Hospital Godden Green. Liam was appointed as the General Manager at Cygnet Hospital Bierley at the end of 2017.
Dr Karim completed her medical training at St Bartholomew and The Royal London School of Medicine, where she was awarded the Brackenbury and Waring Scholarship to Surgery, and the Roxburgh and Henry Silverman prize in Dermatology. She was trained as a Forensic Psychiatrist in the Northern Deanery’s Higher Specialist Training Programme. After completing her training and obtaining a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), Dr Karim was appointed as a NHS Substantive Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in 2015 at The Trevor Gibbens Unit, Maidstone, Kent. In 2018, she joined The Gateway Recovery Centre, Widnes, where she led and was instrumental in the set-up of a new Low Secure Forensic Service.
Dr Karim is an experienced forensic psychiatrist who has worked in a variety of secure, non-secure, community and prison settings. She has a special interest in medicolegal practice and a passion for mental health law. She is an Approved Clinician (AC) for the purposes of the Mental Health Act 1983, an expert witness for Courts, and an approved Educational Supervisor. Dr Karim has also worked with Kings College London to help assess final year medical students for CASC, and has worked with the Royal College of Psychiatrists to help write the MRCPSYCH examination questions. She actively appraises doctors within her organisation.
Dr Karim's area of interest is leadership and management, with a passion for Quality and Innovation. She is fully trained and accredited in applying the principles of LEAN methodology to improve quality and improve clinical outcomes. Dr Karim has been involved in various service development projects over the years resulting in significant quality of care improvements within her roles in the NHS and the independent sector.
Dr Cohen qualified as a doctor from Manchester University in 1976. He undertook psychiatric training in Southampton, gaining MRCPsych in 1982. Higher dual training at senior registrar level was completed at The Royal London and Goodmayes Hospitals, with certification gained in 1985. Dr Cohen is on the GMC Specialist Register in General Psychiatry and Old Age Psychiatry.
Dr Cohen worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist, first at Bexley Hospital for ten years, before then moving to Bradford in 1995. There he also took on the role as lead consultant in the service group and continued to act in this position for more than a decade.
Dr Cohen has worked at Cygnet Hospital Wyke since 2012. Prior to that he helped develop a service for older males, presenting challenging behaviour associated with mental disorder, at Cygnet Hospital Bierley from 2010; this was later transferred to Wyke. He undertakes a variety of medico-legal work providing expert opinions in civil court matters, including capacity assessments for the Court of Protection.
Andrew Hancock attended Huddersfield University after a long and successful career as a professional in rugby league. After qualifying as a RMN Andrew joined Cygnet in 2005 and has since worked at Cygnet Hospital Wyke as well as Cygnet Hospital Bierley.
Andrew has progressed through the ranks of Cygnet from nursing assistant to staff nurse (RMN) to clinical team leader and more recently moved into the post of ward manger. He is one of the university student clinical placement mentors for Shelley ward and believes it is important to give students the best learning environment/experience possible to be able to develop.
Andrew was voted the employee of the year for Cygnet Hospital Bierley in 2016 by service users, colleagues and carers.
Lauren’s interest in Mental Health began when studying for her BSC in Psychology and Criminology in 2009 followed by a MSC in Forensic Psychology in 2010. Lauren began her journey within Cygnet as a Healthcare Support Worker in 2011, before completing her BSC Mental Health Nursing through The Open University in 2017. She has then progressed from RMN to Clinical Team Leader, before becoming Bowling Ward Manager in 2020.
Lauren has worked throughout the service at Bierley developing her skills on other wards, her foremost interest however lies in working with service users diagnosed with Personality Disorder; providing a compassionate and empathetic approach to service user care.
Kirsty qualified as a registered mental health nurse in 2011 and joined Cygnet in 2011 as a newly qualified nurse in the female medium secure unit. During her time working at Cygnet Kirsty has predominately worked within the female medium secure, low secure and locked rehab where she progressed as team leader, then ward manager on the locked rehab ward. Kirsty has also worked within the deaf service female and low secure and learning disability before taking the role as ward manager on the female PICU at Denholme ward Bierley.
Kelly is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, Cognitive-Analytic Therapy Practitioner and Dialectical Behaviour Therapist. She has also completed advanced post-graduate training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and in 2012 she was awarded the “Prize for Excellence in CBT” from the University of Otago.
Kelly gained a BA (Hons) degree in Psychology from the University of Newcastle and a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology from the University of Liverpool. Since qualifying, Kelly has worked across a range of clinical settings including young people’s mental health services, adult mental health services and addiction services in the UK, New Zealand and Australia.
Kelly has extensive training and experience in delivering evidence-based psychological therapies. She has experience of achieving positive clinical outcomes with people presenting with severe and complex mental health problems and has presented these at international conferences. She is passionate about evaluating outcomes and using psychological formulation to inform a person’s care.
Luke Jones is our Head of Social Work and Designated Safeguarding Lead, achieving a First Class BSc Honours degree in Professional Social Work in 2010. Luke initially worked within medium and low secure inpatient services, specialising in personality disorder and substance misuse.
Luke also has international experience in the Canadian province of Ontario and while there Luke undertook post graduate study in treatment of substance addiction in dual diagnosis populations.
Upon returning to the UK in 2014 Luke obtained a post at Cygnet Hospital Bierley. Since being at Cygnet Hospital Bierley Luke has trained as a Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) Therapist and is currently in his final year of an MSc in Advanced Safeguarding Practice. Luke has publications in the areas of Carers Engagement and Childhood Studies.
Sam qualified as a registered mental health nurse in 2012. Sam has since worked in several large organisations across a number of clinical settings and roles including Head of Care for a female personality disorder ward. Sam is keen to promote best practice within the hospital in a hands on manner.
Following serving in the Army, Brian joined Cygnet in 2005 as a Maintenance Assistant. He has since worked his way up to his current position. In his time Brian has worked at a number of other Cygnet units, these include Wyke, Brighouse, Harrogate, Derby, Stevenage and Kewstoke giving him a wide range of knowledge relating to our services.
Brian is also our Health and Safety Lead and Fire Officer at the hospital. Brian holds a number of qualifications in maintenance and other areas of the building trade and is keen to develop his team as well as creating a safe well maintained environment, that is appealing to patients, carers and staff alike.
Stephen has worked in catering for almost twenty years, the last fifteen of which have been in the healthcare sector. Stephen is qualified in Diabetic cookery and to Level 4 in hygiene management.
Stephen is highly motivated and leads the catering team which provides well balanced and nutritious meals to all the hospital's clientele.
