The programme is underpinned by Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). A mindfulness-based behavioural therapy with a strong evidence-base (Hayes et al., 1999). The programme also uses Motivational Interviewing and the Stages of Change model. Both of which have proven benefits when integrated with other therapeutic approaches (Miller & Rose, 2009).
A strength of our programme is that we address service users’ personal reasons for not using. Also rather than aiming to merely ‘stop’ using alcohol or other substances, the programme aims to ‘fill the gap’ that substances once filled.
Programme content and structure
As shown, the programme comprises a period of individualised assessment and formulation, followed by three tiers of group and individual therapy, ending with an individualised Relapse Prevention intervention.
