Service users usually come to us in crisis, may be non-adherent with their medication or this could be their first presentation with mental health symptoms. All service users are detained under the Mental Health Act. We aim to respond to all emergency referrals within one hour of receipt of adequate clinical information.
Service users on Denholme Ward have support from the full MDT and all therapy interventions available including occupational therapy, psychology, social workers, advocacy, IMHA services and others.
Our multi-disciplinary team works across the whole hospital and makes use of a broad range of therapies, that are tailored to individual needs. We run a number of groups, such as a daily psychology-led ‘Coping Skills Group’. This uses a cognitive and dialectical behavioural approach in order to help service users with distress tolerance and emotion regulation strategies.
We also offer a comprehensive programme for those individuals who, as well as having a major mental illness, have abused drugs and or alcohol.
Admissions are usually short-term but we can support people longer-term if they require extra support while an alternative service is found. The aim on Denholme is to help people learn how to manage their mental health and reinforce their daily living skills, to prepare for independent life back in the community, or for moving into mainstream rehabilitation.
Denholme has close working links with Cygnet Hospital Harrogate and if suitable can offer this step down link to acute services to enable women to move on from the PICU environment in a timely manner.
Cygnet Hospital Bierley is a modern, purpose built building and Denholme Ward offers a safe and calming environment within it. Service users have access to outdoor space including secure courtyards, a dedicated activities of daily living (ADL) kitchen, and a variety of activity rooms including an art room and an IT classroom. There is also a fully equipped gym. All service users have their own bedrooms with en-suite facilities.
