Stigma In Mental Health: The role stigma plays and strategies for positive change

This free educational event for professionals, co-produced with service users and experts by experience, will address the problem of mental health stigma and what strategies can be used to help those affected by stigma.


Jointly chaired by Cygnet Health Care’s Director of Nursing and Patient Experience, Julie Kerry and Raf Hamaizia, Cygnet’s Expert by Experience Lead, the event will provide an opportunity for learning and discussion on this important subject.

Speakers and topics covered in the all-day programme will include:

  • Service users from Cygnet Hospital Bierley – Stigma – What it means to us
  • Kevin Scallon, Lead for Recovery Academy, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust – Recovery Academies and their varied roles
  • John-Paul Kozah, Business Development Manager and IMHA and Lindsey Martin, Operations Director, Advent Advocacy – Advocacy; Its role in addressing stigma
  • Holly Alix and Angela Wall, Mental Health First Aid Trainers and Sarah Skilby, Racing Welfare – Mental Health First Aid – Its role in assisting organisations to address mental health stigma
  • Lucinda Anderson, York University, Dr Rachel Newton, Cygnet Hospital Bierley and Dr Kelly Elsegood, Cygnet Hospital Bierley – A group intervention to inspire and empower service users in the face of stigma
  • Expert by Experience, Deborah – Internalised Stigma – Deborah’s Story

There will also be a series of workshops facilitated by Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and a short vlog from press blogger, Aimee Wilson.
