Child and Adolescent Mental Health

We provide specialist mental health services for children and adolescents. This includes psychiatry and psychology for young people with emotional, behavioural, development or learning problems in an outpatient setting. We also have a specialist unit for young people with mental health issues, who require a hospital stay.

Outpatient Service

Children and young people can come to us with any of the following problems:

  • Anxiety or Depression
  • Attention and hyperactivity problems (ADHD)
  • Abuse
  • Relationship Problems
  • Bereavement
  • School problems and learning difficulties

The child or young person generally visits one of our outpatient clinics with a member of their family. We evaluate them, conduct psychological assessments, and then decide together on the most appropriate brief or long-term therapy. Treatment usually includes individual, family and group therapy, and parent counselling.

Our Young Persons Unit

We can also offer specialist hospital care for young people aged 12-17, with acute mental health problems. Each service user has their own room, in a safe, comfortable hospital, with access to many other amenities and services. How long they stay depends on the severity of their problems, and our aim is to help each patient get well and return home as soon as possible.

Care may include family, group and individual therapy, education and activity programmes. We also involve other specialists, if there are other issues such as eating disorders or addictive behaviour.

We invite all agencies involved to attend the service user's reviews, and provide the referrer with regular treatment summaries and ongoing communication, as well as full reports and a discharge summary. Optional aftercare is also available.
