Adolescent Mental Health
There are many reasons why adolescents are at a high risk of developing mental health problems. Pressures relating to academic studies, the breakdown or formation of relationships with peers/family members, the social need for acceptance, and pressures to succeed and progress in life, are all common catalysts in the development of an emotional or psychological problem.
Mental Health can be described as psychological and emotional well-being and is as important as your physical well-being. Mental health is interlinked with how you think, feel and act in every situation you encounter, and determines how people handle the negative and positive things in their lives.
Evidence shows that an increasing number of young people are suffering from emotional or psychological problems and recent data suggests that1:
- One in ten young people have mental health problems that are severe enough to require professional help.
- 20% of children have a mental health problem in any given year.
- Rates of mental health problems among children increase as they reach adolescence.
- 40% of children would not want anyone to know if they had a mental health problem.
- One in five young people say they would find it hard to talk to another young person with mental health problems.
- One in four young people think that someone with a mental health problem is less likely to have friends.
