Acute Mental Health Services & Psychiatric Care

Cygnet Health Care is a leading provider of acute inpatient mental health care for the majority of private medical insurers as well as the majority of NHS PCTs.

All patients are assessed and treated in a manner appropriate to their needs. Each patient is risk assessed as part of their initial admission process.

All patients are admitted to single sex facilities with single room accommodation en-suite facilities. All Cygnet facilities are registered with the Care Quality Commission.

An inpatient stay in hospital can be for a few days to a few weeks depending on the nature of the problem. Patients may undergo a number of treatments but the majority fall into two categories which are often used in conjunction with each other:

  1. Drug treatments - the consultants within the hospital may prescribe medications to assist the treatment process. The type and amount of medication will be discussed with each patient individually.

  2. Therapy treatments - these will take the form of individual or group talking therapies. Each hospital has a comprehensive weekly programme to provide these treatments. Each patient will have a care plan to agree which groups they should attend.

Once a patient starts to recover Cygnet staff will undertake the Care Programme Approach (CPA), which will agree the aftercare arrangements for all patients before they are discharged.

Cygnet have extensive experience in managing patients referred by NHS managers or privately and are well versed in the need to liaise closely with the referring organisation to achieve a smooth and timely transfer of care back to an outpatient or community setting.

Accessing Treatment

Patients wishing to access these services privately should call Cygnet Central directly on 0845 070 4170 or their nearest Cygnet Hospital. Patients will then be advised as to their individual situation which will be dependent on their insurance cover as well as their clinical requirements.

Assessment for admission will ordinarily be via an outpatient appointment with a consultant psychiatrist. An appointment can normally be obtained within 24 hours.

NHS managers can access these services by either ringing the relevant hospital directly or contacting our central bed finding agency, Cygnet Central on 0845 070 4170.

The referral process will involve a short but detailed questionnaire being completed over the phone. NHS staff may be requested to fax a recent mental health state and discharge summaries to a safe haven fax number.

Cygnet staff will undertake a risk assessment over the phone and undertake to inform the NHS manager making the referral within 1 hour of the referral being made.
