Bronte Ward
Service & Objectives
Our female complex care ward provides care and treatment within a low secure environment for female patients over 18 years of age. These patients present difficult and challenging behaviours which may not be safely managed in an open environment.
Who is appropriate?
- Females aged 18+
- Dangerous behaviour and/or chronic challenging behaviour
- Patients who represent a persistent risk of absconding to avoid treatment, where subsequent relapse carries a risk of dangerous behaviour
- Patients with an intractable mental state and behavioural problems
- Patients who present with a dual or multiple diagnosis and who present with an intractable mental state and behaviour problems which could include substance misuse. The primary diagnosis will be mental illness.
- Those who fail to progress in an open acute ward and may benefit from a stay in a low secure environment.
Treatment Programme
Needs are assessed by the multi-disciplinary team and care is planned accordingly. Therapies include focus and diversional work, cognitive behavioural therapy, index offence work and individualised programmes according to each patient’s needs.
Rehabilitation includes daily living skills and social skills training. There are specific activities targeted at females in addition to the comprehensive therapy programme in palce across the hospital.
Patients are involved in planning their care and, where appropriate, families are encouraged to contribute.
Making a Referral
Admission is arranged initially by telephone, where bed availability can be confirmed. Bronte staff may wish to assess the patient and this will be normally be within 24 hours of the initial referral. Admissions to Bronte Ward are arranged to ensure they will gain maximum benefit from our service.
Discharge Planning
A full review of the patient will take place prior to discharge including:
- assessment of the patient’s strengths and weaknesses in the course of treatment;
- a presentation for the type of medication, support, accommodation and other resources required for future stability and safety
- known warning signs of risk of relapse
