Austen Ward
Service & Objectives
Our intensive care ward provides care and treatment within a low secure environment for male patients who are over 18 and have an acute mental health problem which cannot be safely managed in an open environment.
Who is appropriate?
- Male patients over 18
- Dangerous behaviour and/or chronic challenging behaviour
- Patients who represent a persistent risk of absconding
- Patients with an intractable mental state and behavioural problems who are unlikely to immediately be suitable for Section 17 unescorted leave
- Patients who present with a dual diagnosis of mental illness.
Treatment Programme
The treatment programme is geared towards gaining control of the mental health problem as quickly as possible and stabilising the patient to enable them to be transferred to and managed effectively in an acute environment.
Patients are involved in planning their care and, where appropriate, families are encouraged to contribute alongside the referring team’s clinicians.
We offer high quality care tailored to meet patients’ individual needs which includes acitivities of daily living, diversional and focus activities, alongside a medication regime and multi-disciplinary assessment.
Patients have access to a range of activities including:
- Creative writing
- Relapse prevention strategies
- Computer skills
- Gym sessions
- Craft groups
- Anger management
- Drug & alcohol awareness
- Assertiveness training
- Health promotion
- Excursions
- Current affairs
Making a Referral
We take referrals for intensive care by telephone consultation, 24-hours a day and make a prompt decision on admission to ensure the patient receives treatment as quickly as possible.
Referrals for low secure services can be made by letter with a current risk assessment and a recent Care Programme Approach (CPA) report to the Clinical Manager who ensures prompt assessment by a senior nurse and a doctor.
Discharge Planning
A full review of the patient will take place prior to discharge including:
- assessment of the patient’s strengths and weaknesses in the course of treatment;
- a presentation for the type of medication, support, accommodation and other resources required for future stability and safety
- known warning signs of risk of relapse
