Saunders Ward - Male low secure rehabilitation
Service & Objectives
Saunders Ward is a 15-bed ward that admits patients over the age of eighteen with severe and enduring mental health problems who need low secure rehabilitation and care.
Service Description
- integrated care pathway to recovery
- de-institutionalisation
- homely environment
- rehabilitation and care
- re-integration into the community (where appropriate)
Our objectives are to:
- provide an environment in which male patients’ individual needs are met by a multi-disciplinary team
- foster independence and motivate those we work with by understanding their symptoms and behaviour, so as to promote positive change.
Treatment Programme
Our care approach is developed from the Tidal Model. We have adapted strategies that allow us to implement realistic and achievable individualised care management in consultation with the patient. The main focus of this interdisciplinary model of care is the empowerment of our patients.
Our model has a patient-centred and interpersonal approach to care. It gives us the opportunity to formalise the patient's perception of their own problems and promotes a greater awareness and understanding of these problems. Our team approach ensures that the patient's views are listened to, taken on board and placed at the centre of all care planning.
The programme:
- is person centred
- works towards both learning and recreational objectives
- focuses on physical as well as mental and social well-being
Activities available on Saunders Ward include:
- keep fit / aerobics
- healthy eating, nutrition and menu planning
- good grooming, personal care and budgeting
- relaxation techniques
- library, book club, newspapers and creative writing
- art, crafts and model-making
Making a referral
We accept referrals on a pre-planned as well as on an emergency basis. Assessments will ordinarily take place within 48 hours of referral, and the referring hospital will receive notification of whether the patient has been accepted for admission within 24 hours of assessment.
Emergency referrals can be accepted within 4 hours of initial referral. We are also prepared to travel to where the patient is located and transport the patient back to our hospital, if necessary.
