Facilities
The hospital design allows us to treat patients in a secure and therapeutic environment, whilst assisting us in maintaining a high threshold for the implementation of special nursing.
Patients have their own room with an en-suite shower room. Our aim has been to combine comfort and privacy with robust relational and physical security arrangements.
Each ward has a large open lounge area equipped with a television and DVD player and this lounge has direct access onto a courtyard. In addition to the main lounge, there is a separate quiet lounge, providing further space with a second television.
There are excellent activity facilities including a large gym with equipment for 5-a-side football, basketball and table tennis. In addition, there is a well-equipped exercise room.
Patients who are granted Section 17 leave can, amongst other things, participate in gardening at our off-site allotment, go ten-pin bowling or go out for a day trip.
The Team
The multi-disciplinary teams consist of:
- Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist
- Ward Manager
- Mental Health Nurses
- Support Workers
- Specialist Staff Grade Psychiatrist
- Psychologist
- Occupational Therapist
- Social worker
- Drama Therapist
- Teaching Assistant
The multi-disciplinary team is at the centre of our treatment philosophy. Each patient is allocated a primary nurse who develops and fosters an ongoing relationship with the patient. We use this relationship as a centre point around which the other members of the team add their individual skills.
The needs of patients are met within a sensitively tailored setting, taking into consideration their cultural diversity. We have an active and well-developed Psychology Programme [PDF] and Occupational Therapy Programme [PDF].
Making a Referral
We accept referrals on a pre-planned as well as on an emergency basis. Assessments will ordinarily take place within 48 hours of referral, and the referring hospital will receive notification of whether the patient has been accepted for admission within 24 hours of assessment.
Emergency referrals can be accepted within 4 hours of initial referral. We are also prepared to travel to where the patient is located and transport the patient back to our hospital, if necessary.
Discharge
From the time of admission, our staff are already planning for patient discharge by preparing Care Plans and assessments. Some patients are transferred back to their local NHS hospital if a bed becomes available. Others may remain at Cygnet until they can be discharged home or transferred to another appropriate placement.
