Male Intensive Care – Nash Ward

Service & Objectives

Kewstoke GroundsNash Ward is a 15 bed intensive care ward providing therapeutic care and treatment within a low secure environment for male patients who have an acute mental health problem.

We provide a 24 hour service for individuals with acute psychiatric symptoms which cannot be managed in an open ward environment.

Our aims and objectives include the promotion of a safe and therapeutic environment and the implementation of the care planning process which includes specific risk assessment and interventions which strive towards the stability of a patient’s mental health problem.

The team on Nash Ward are all experienced and dynamic practitioners who are able to contribute towards our aims and objectives in a positive and non-judgmental fashion.

Who is appropriate?

We accept referrals from both the criminal justice system and the NHS. Each patient will be assessed on an individual basis against the admission and exclusion criteria.

  • Nash Ward will accept patients who are 18 years old and over.
  • Patients will be detained under the Mental Health Act (1983), including those under sections relating to criminal proceedings. There are no patients admitted on an informal basis.
  • All patients admitted will have a primary diagnosis pertinent to mental health problems.
  • Nash Ward does not admit people with a learning disability due to the environment and expertise being geared solely towards patients with a primary diagnosis of mental ill health who are in crisis.
  • Nash Ward is operational 24hours per day and is able to admit patients at any time.

Treatment Programme

  • All treatment programmes have a focus on gaining stability of the patient and then helping them to move to another environment by way of progression.
  • Nash Ward has doctors and nurses who are trained and experienced in caring for patients who are unstable in terms of mental health.
  • The programmes of care incorporate risk assessment and care planning protocols inclusive of the Care Programme Approach (CPA), as well as regular ward meetings with doctors and other members of the multi-disciplinary team who are able to contribute towards the health and welfare of the patient.
  • A low stimuli environment is promoted within Nash Ward and each patient will have a named nurse who will oversee their care and advocate accordingly.
  • Patients are encouraged to use their recreation and leisure time constructively and to attend the excellent facilities that the hospital provides if they are able to do so.

Making a Referral

  • Referrals to Nash Ward can be submitted by any healthcare professional. We would ask for information about the proposed admission at the earliest opportunity; on receipt of this the ward team will make a prompt decision to admit and will start to put the admission process into effect.
  • A referral can be made by completing a referral form and faxing it to 01934 415832.
  • The referral process involves the ward MDT assessing both risk and presentation of the patient and in most cases a decision will be made within the hour.
