How do I refer?

Is there a cost for the assessment?

No. There is no cost for the assessment.

What is the assessment process?

Initially we will ask you some questions regardng the patient. We will then fax a pro-forma assessment document and will request an up-to-date clinical risk assessment.

What happens next?

Our nursing team will contact our on-call Consultant Psychiatrist to discuss the referral on receipt of the risk assessment. The Consultant Psychiatrist will make a decision as soon as possible.

Appropriate funding must be in place before the patient can be accepted.

Referrals can be accepted across the 24 hour continuum and we will do all we can to facilitate the admission.

What is the admission procedure?

Once we have agreed to accept the patient we will arrange with you the most appropriate route of transfer. On occasion we may be able to collect a patient from the transferring hospital but this is decided on a case by case basis.

Do you maintain contact with referrers during an admission?

Following arrival our Consultant will write to confirm his assessment and treatment plan. We also send formal weekly updates and are able to discuss the ongoing care of the patient by telephone. There may be occasions where we need to be in contact with the patients outside agencies to facilitate the patient’s care.

What is the average length of stay?

We have treated NHS patients from 24 hours to 24 months depending on the needs of the patient and availability of appropriate local beds. Many NHS patients who come to Harrogate spend only a few days here until local beds become available.

What happens if a patient relapses or problems occur?

Liaison with local services and treatment funders are a key part of our care process.

Where do service users go after they have been at Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke?

Either back to their referring hospital as inpatients or to treatment in the community directed by their local RMO.

Would it be possible to arrange a visit to the unit?
