Denholme Ward - Female Psychiatric Intensive Care Service
Service & Objectives
Denholme Ward is a 15 bed intensive care ward providing therapeutic care and treatment within a low secure environment for female patients who have an acute mental health problem.
We provide a 24 hour service for individuals with acute psychiatric symptoms which cannot be managed in an open ward environment.
Our aims and objectives include the promotion of a safe and therapeutic environment and the implementation of a care planning process that includes specific risk assessment and interventions which strive towards the stability of a patient’s mental health problem.
The multi-disciplinary team (MDT) on Denholme Ward are all experienced and motivated practitioners who are able to contribute towards the treatment programme aims and objectives in a positive and non-judgmental fashion.
Who is appropriate?
We accept referrals from both the criminal justice system, medium secure services and the wider NHS. Each patient will be assessed on an individual basis against the admission and exclusion criteria.
- Denholme Ward will accept patients who are 18 years old and over.
- Patients will be detained under the Mental Health Act (1983, revised 2007), including those under sections of the act relating to criminal proceedings. There are no informal patients admitted.
- All patients admitted will have a primary diagnosis of mental illness.
- Denholme Ward does not admit people with a primary diagnosis of a learning disability or personality disorder.
Denholme Ward is operational 24hours per day and is able to admit patients at any time.
Treatment Programme
Treatment programmes are designed to help the patient regain a level of stability of mental health that allows them to move on to a less restrictive environment in as short a time as possible.
Denholme Ward has a MDT that is trained and experienced in caring for patients who are unstable in terms of their mental health. Access to GP care is also readily available.
Treatment programmes are carried out using the Care Programme Approach (CPA). Each patient has a named nurse to oversee their care. Thorough risk assessment and care planning is carried out and there are regular ward meetings and reviews carried out by the MDT with the involvement of the patient. Patients have access to independent advocacy services.
Patients are encouraged to access therapy services offered by the Thornton Department. They are also encouraged to use recreation and leisure time constructively and to attend the excellent facilities that the hospital provides if they are able to do so.
Discharge Planning
A full CPA review of the patient will take place prior to discharge or transfer including:
- Assessment of the service user’s progress, strengths and weaknesses in the course of treatment
- Details of the type of medication, support, accommodation and other resources required for future stability and safety
- Thorough risk assessment including known warning signs of risk of relapse
