Fairwax Ward - Male Complex Needs Services (Low Secure)
Service & Objectives
The emphasis on Fairfax Ward is on the rehabilitation of male patients with complex mental health needs requiring care and treatment in a low secure setting. In order to achieve this goal, staff working on the ward are trained in Psycho-Social Interventions (PSI) and work within a multi-disciplinary framework of care.
Who is appropriate?
Referral to this service is by telephone contact or letter to with an external assessment within five days by a senior nurse and a doctor. We accept referrals from PCTs, high or medium secure hospitals, other NHS units and the prison service with the following admission criteria:
- Age 18+
- Dangerous behaviour and/or chronic challenging behaviour
- Patients who represent a persistent risk of absconding to avoid treatment, where subsequent relapse carries a risk of dangerous behaviour
- Patients with an intractable mental state and behavioural problems who are unlikely to immediately be suitable for section 17 unescorted leave
- Patients who present with a dual or multiple diagnosis and who present with an intractable mental state and behaviour problems which could include substance misuse
- Those who fail to progress in PICU may be considered
Treatment Programme
This care is based on an individual needs assessment which identifies the strengths, needs and deficits in the person’s life. This assists the process of developing a plan of care to work towards the rehabilitation of each individual. Teamwork is vital in the delivery of care, as are regular multi-disciplinary meetings to discuss progress. Likewise, CPA meetings are also arranged to discuss the management of care and what is required to make the future more positive. Each patient is given an individual therapy programme which is reviewed weekly to ensure that the patient is satisfied with their progress and any relevant changes are made. Short and long-term goals can be devised and progress monitored.
