Bowling Ward - Male Acute & Female PD Stepdown Service
Service & Objectives
Bowling Ward is an open, L-shaped ward which has been physically divided in half, effectively creating two independent units. One half is for the treatment of male acute patients, while the other provides a step down service from our New Dawn Ward, which cares for women with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. We also take direct admissions to the female side of the ward for PD women who are experiencing a difficult time in the community and require respite care in a hospital environment.
Either unit has its own entrance and both provide separate lounge, recreational and laundry facilities. Dining and pharmacy rooms sit between the two and are accessed at separate times by patients. Thus, we are able to maintain the privacy and dignity of patients by providing separate facilities for men and women but accommodate the needs of both.
Bowling Ward offers a multi-disciplinary and therapeutic approach to psychiatric care, promoting recovery, independence and supporting individuals who require a safe and comfortable environment. We provide a 24 hour service for patients who can be managed in an open ward environment, by offering:
- High staffing levels
- Experienced trained staff
- Prompt assessment and response
- Focus on risk assessment and management
- Therapeutic management of violence and aggression
Admission & Admission Criteria
Referral to this service is by telephone enquiry to the nurse-in-charge. Assessment is a paper based assessment which should be completed within one hour.
We accept referrals of patients that may or may not be detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 with the following admission criteria:
- Age 18+
- Acute and/or chronic challenging behaviour
- Women with a primary diagnosis of borderline personality disorder
- Patients who represent a persistent risk of absconding to avoid treatment, where subsequent relapse carries a risk of dangerous behaviour
- Patients who present with a dual diagnosis of mental illness and a secondary diagnosis of substance abuse, personality disorder or mild learning disability
Treatment Programme
We believe that each patient should be treated as an individual and that the care offered should be tailored to the individual need. Wherever possible we encourage the involvement of the patient, their family and relevant others in the planning of care as we believe it gives a holistic picture of the issues and problems that the patient and others face. Each patient is treated with respect and dignity. A therapeutic relationship is vitally important in the patients’ progress and we endeavour to maintain this throughout the patient’s treatment.
Patients on Bowling ward have access to a multi disciplinary team and a range of activities including:
- Creative Writing
- Computer Skills
- Gym Sessions
- Relapse prevention
- Craft Groups
- Anger Management
- Drug and Alcohol Awareness
- Assertiveness Training
- Health Promotion

Discharge Planning
A full review of the patient will take place prior to discharge including:
- Assessment of the patient's strengths and weaknesses in the course of treatment within the low secure unit.
- A presentation for the type of medication, support, accommodation and other resources required for future stability and safety.
- Known warning signs of risk of relapse.
- The referring NHS team will attend CPA/Section 117 planning meetings.
- One month's notice is given if possible and minutes are copied to the CMHT with the date of the next CPA/Section 117 meeting.
