Our Eating Disorders Unit offers specialised psychological treatment for patients of both sexes with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or other atypical eating disorders.
Treatment
Treatment consists of an individualised care plan structured around established therapies and goal setting between patient and staff. We aim to improve physical health and safely restore normal weight and eating patterns. We also examine and tackle the triggers and causes of the eating disorder through a range of therapies.
Individual Sessions
Treatment is also available to you as an out-patient. You can attend for individual sessions with a Consultant Psychiatrist or Therapist. Appointments can be made hopefully to fit in with your lifestyle.
Group Therapy Sessions
You can access therapy sessions as a day or half-day patient. Groups may include individuals with problems other than an eating disorder, although themes within groups touch on all individual problems.
10 week residential programme
We offer a ten week residential programme which runs through three stages, addressing patients' psychological difficulties as well as issues surrounding eating and body image. Established therapies are combined with goals agreed between patients and staff:
Stage 1 - Two week inpatient assessment period. Individuals complete their own self-assessment. Your Consultant Psychiatrist and named nurse will also complete an assessment. A dietician will plan a menu promoting nutritional intake.
Stage 2 - Four week continued assessment with the introduction of group work and individual sessions. The dietician will continue to attend and plan the menu.
Stage 3 - Four weeks of continued group work and individual sessions which are more in depth. Patients work with our dietician on eating in social situations, shopping for food and relapse prevention techniques.
The programme includes evaluation of medical/physical status, psychological assessment, group and individual therapy, nutrition education and medication.
