The therapist helps the patient by drawing upon a number of different schools of psychotherapy and psychological understanding. The therapist identifies which model of psychotherapy would be most beneficial to the patient's difficulties. For example, a person who has difficulty developing trusting relationships might be helped through a psychodynamic approach.
A person who has difficulties with making decisions might be helped with a Person-Centered model of therapy. A person suffering from social anxiety, or fear and phobias would be helped through a cognitive behavioral approach. The therapist may draw upon a number of approaches at the same time, or draw upon each as different parts of the patient's life are addressed
