Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy which was designed for those with borderline personality disorder. It is aimed at changing the typical behaviour patterns of people with Borderline Personality Disorder.

DBT places emphasis on modifying current maladaptive behaviours such as self harming and other para-suicidal behaviours before addressing long standing interpersonal conflicts and the effects of early trauma and abuse. It is a combination of behavioural and cognitive therapy

The concept behind the treatment is that change can only occur in the context of acceptance, and that acceptance, in itself, is change. The therapist must continue to validate the borderline while teaching her to change. The second context includes the therapist teaching the borderline new, and balanced ways of thinking, feeling, and acting.
