Therapy Department

Art TherapyThe Therapy Department at Cygnet Hospital Wyke provides a programme of care which is tailored to serve the specific needs of our service user group.

This programme of care is informed by evidence based practice and is designed in collaboration with our service users.

Our overall philosophy is to contribute to the lives of those entrusted to our care by providing therapies which encourage a culture of self-sufficiency and independence. The Therapy department consists of many different professions which include:

Clinical and Forensic Psychology

The Psychology department is comprised of a Clinical Psychologist, a Forensic Psychologist and an Assistant Psychologist. We use standardised assessment tools to aid our understanding of a service user's cognitive functioning, risk of future violence, personality features, trauma history and so on. The results of these assessments are shared with the service user's care team to inform treatment and management.

Following the assessment, therapy goals are formulated in collaboration with the service user and form the basis of therapeutic interventions. These interventions typically employ a Cognitive Behavioural approach and include anger management, trauma focused therapy, emotion regulation therapy, dealing with symptoms of psychosis and offending behaviour work.

Therapeutic Social Work

Therapeutic Social Work is an important part of the Multi-Disciplinary approach at Cygnet Hospital Wyke. Therapeutic Social Workers help service users deal with a variety of issues within the context of Statutory Mental Health legislation and Safeguarding guidelines. They also use their therapeutic skills in order to facilitate improvements in our service users' lives, for example helping the service user to become more empowered within a forensic low secure setting.

The role also involves problem solving and enhancing well-being by working with individuals and their families. This contributes to the Care Programme Approach of care delivery and can improve quality of life for both service users and their carers.

Occupational Therapy

The Occupational Therapists provide structured care for clients across all the wards at Cygnet Hospital Wyke. They specialize in the improvement and maintenance of function within the domains of work, self-care and leisure. Psychiatric illnesses often impair service users' ability to perform their roles effectively within the community. For this reason, vocational, cognitive and psycho-social rehabilitation are necessary to enable the service user to be effectively reintegrated into the community.

Occupational Therapists and Therapy Assistants work with service users on an individual basis in order to identify their strengths and limitations. Specific Interventions are then planned.

Art Therapy and Music Therapy

The Arts Therapist provides service users with a safe and confidential space to express themselves and to reflect. There are clinically effective therapy approaches, particularly for service users who at times find it difficult to express themselves verbally.

We have a variety of art materials and musical instruments available to our clients. This allows them to explore safe ways of expressing themselves and to form therapeutic relationships which can be of great benefit when working with their difficulties. Service users do not need to be skilled in art or music to benefit from this form of therapy.

Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic and Integrative Psychotherapy

Psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy is particularly suitable for service users who have been identified as having difficulties forming and maintaining satisfying relationships, or who have had traumatic experiences, either in their younger years or later on in life.

Psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy deals with the unconscious mind and is based on psychoanalytic theory and practice. Integrative psychotherapy uses psychodynamic models of intervention in a relationship context with particular reference to addressing developmental needs, Objects Relation and Gestalt models of working.

In addition to the individual therapies outlined above, analytical group work can also be facilitated in order to promote choice in our approach to service users' treatment. The length of the therapy is dependent on the identified problem area and may therefore be offered on either a short-term or long-term basis.

All referred clients have the opportunity to engage in the assessment process and to decide, in collaboration with the therapist, if this type of therapy might help alleviate the identified problems.
